Yuliya Dzyabko (Ibaraki Christian University, Hitachi, Japan) examines the dynamics of language practices among Ukrainian refugees in Japan. The study draws on the survey (109 participants) and longitudinal research conducted between 2023 and 2026, involving 28 Ukrainian refugees in Japan across three rounds of in-depth interviews. The study shows that language choices among Ukrainian refugees are dynamic, shaped by the interplay of Russia’s full-scale invasion, prolonged displacement in Japan, and the interaction of Ukrainian and Japanese language ideologies.
