Dr. Svitlana Pidoprygora provided insight into the development of Ukrainian comics as a reflection of societal perceptions of war and to explore their various functions as a medium during wartime – including documentation, psychological reflection, and national myth-making. The talk examined the emergence and evolution of different comic genres that have arisen as a direct response to Russian aggression. Since 2014, the annexation of Crimea and military actions in Donetsk and Luhansk regions have fueled a surge of creativity, leading to the rise of superhero comics, war comics, and autobiographical graphic novels. Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022 further intensified these trends within the Ukrainian comics scene. Cartoonists swiftly responded to the unfolding events, leveraging digital platforms and social networks to document and process the complex realities of war. By recounting eyewitness testimonies and journalistic reports, comics offer a vivid tableau of different war experiences, prioritizing historical accuracy over fiction. A notable example of this is the documentary comics published in INKER magazine. The final section of the presentation examined the global impact of Ukrainian comics, their translations, and their role in raising international awareness of Russia’s war against Ukraine through compelling visual storytelling.
